Guarding against Computer Vision Syndrome

Computer Vision Syndrome

Taking care of following factors avoids or reduces the symptoms arising from computer overuse.

  • Location of computer screen – Optimally, the center of the computer screen should be kept 20-28 inches away from the eyes, and about 4 or 5 inches below eye level.
  • Lighting – Avoid the glare from computer screen, particularly arising from lighting or windows. Reposition the computer screen, drape the windows and avoid bright overhead bulbs.
  • Rest breaks – Rest the eyes eyes for 15 minutes after every two hours of continuous computer use. Also, for every 20 minutes of computer viewing, look into the distance for 20 seconds to allow your eyes a chance to refocus.
  • Blinking – To minimize chances of developing dry eye, take care to blink frequently while using computers. This keeps the front surface of your eye moist.
